Spherical grab is used on jobs where drilling has to be carried out free of vibrations and or where partially cased or uncased drilled shafts are to be produced, the high deadweight in conjunction with the high closing force ensures a high efficiency

Double rope spherical grab with high close force suitable for vibration free boring in semi hard and hard soil conditions
Hammer grab with high clamping force, particularly suitable for drilling of holes in rocky soils and for working under water load

spherical Hammer grab is the most important tool used in piling and determines the progression of the drilling. In addition to the maximum grabbing capacity, unloading is quick and easy. The stresses of the whole structure are relieved and very strong
Surfaces exposed to wear are made of NM400 material. Chassis and arms that require strength are made material. Guides and holders are made of Q355 material.

A spherical hammer grab (often simply called a spherical grab) is a heavy-duty excavation tool used in deep foundation and piling work, specifically for bored piles and well drilling. While standard hammer grabs are often cylindrical or flat-walled, the spherical grab features rounded, "bowl-shaped" shells that are optimized for high closing forces and excavation in difficult ground conditions.
Core Functions & Advantages
The spherical design is engineered to solve specific challenges that standard grabs struggle with:
High Closing Force: Because of its geometry and high deadweight (often reaching over 10–20 tons for large diameters), it exerts immense splitting force on the ground. This makes it ideal for hard soil, gravel, and soft rock.
Vibration-Free Boring: Unlike standard hammer grabs that rely heavily on the impact of free-fall (percussion) to break the ground, spherical grabs can "dig" into the soil during the closing process. This allows for drilling in urban areas where vibration must be minimized.
Under-Water Operation: The streamlined spherical shape reduces water resistance, making it more efficient for "wet" drilling where the borehole is filled with water or slurry.
Calibration & Verticality: Many hydraulic spherical grabs include a turning device (±100°) to ensure the borehole remains perfectly vertical and calibrated.
Comparison: Spherical vs. Standard Hammer Grab
Feature Standard Hammer Grab Spherical Hammer Grab
Shape Cylindrical or X-type Spherical / Rounded shells
Best For Sands, loose gravel, silts Hard clays, boulders, soft rock
Action High impact / Free-fall High closing/splitting force
Vibration Significant (percussive) Low to None
Soil Removal Very fast in loose soil More efficient in cohesive/hard soil
Technical Specifications (Typical Range)
Spherical grabs are categorized by the diameter of the casing they are designed to work inside.
Diameter Range: Typically from 900mm to 3600mm.
Weight: Can range from 6,000 kg for smaller models to over 31,000 kg for large-scale operations
Operation:
Single-Rope: Uses a release crown and pawl system to open/close.
Double-Rope: One rope for lifting/lowering and a second for active opening/closing, allowing the operator to loosen ground by "cycling" the jaws at the bottom of the hole.
Common Applications
Cased Boreholes: Used alongside a casing oscillator or rotator to clear out the "soil plug" inside the steel casing.Hard Strata: Breaking through boulders or layers of semi-hard rock that a standard auger might skid over.
Large Diameter Piling: Used in bridge foundations, skyscrapers, and marine construction where massive piles (2m+ diameter) are required.
Note on Maintenance: Because these tools deal with extreme abrasion, they often feature exchangeable teeth on the shells. In very hard rock, a chisel is often used first to pre-crush the material before the spherical grab is sent down to remove the debris.
